AFC meets NFC

NFL Logo link to home page

The day started with a tropical storm that turned out to be a balmy 27 degrees and clear. The start of the game from an AFC fan perspective was sloppy and it looked like a mish-mash of pros with out any solid direction. I don't even want to repeat Bill Belichick's bullshit words : "It is what it is"

With a scary first half we weren't sure how this game was going to turn out. We as you al l should know are AFC Fans and rooting for our player's. I couldn't have been more happier with 6 Kansas City Chiefs and 2 Niners, rockin the Pro bowl. Even more exciting was seeing Rivers sit down and my boy Cassel step in. If only we could have started him the results may have been drastically different. I will admit that first throw by Cassel picked by the boys in blue not only made me nervous but physically ill.

Photo

Cassel completed 5-of-12 passes for 95 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. Charles kept doing what he does and averaged seven yards per carry with 10 carries for 72 yards including a touchdown. Bowe had four receptions for 54 yards.

The game is always a laid-back affair with teams not really wanting to hit each other or give 100 percent. The AFC side took that to an extreme in the first half as they allowed the NFC to get to a 42-0 lead. Each QB had a first half interceptions and the final touchdown was a multiple lateral touchdown from the center (thrown by Matt Cassel).

The game over-all was not as impressive as the high score, but either way it's Football. We love the game and were glad to be apart of it...!!

Next year we will be attending the Pro-Bowl and hope to see a few more Niners!!

Cheers!

NHL All star recap!!

Nhlall-star2011logo_display_image

Well we all new it would be a great day for the best of the best, but did you expect the outcomes??? We were obviously rooting for Team Staal with our boy Kesler and H.Sedin playing like they do. But at least Daniel came home with a win under his belt. You have to wonder what the conversation was like between the Sedin twins post game. Their first time separated. It can only mean good things in my opinion. Hell the rest of us non-twins all do it alone....it will only make the boys stronger!!

In review of some of the comments out there I thought I would share words from Sarah Sotoodeh. She's a staff writer for USC. We like to share words from different writers. Everyone has their own perspective. Happy Hockey!

Canucks back in action February 1st against the Dallas Stars!!

Even with the Super Bowl around the corner, hockey was the game of choice this weekend.  The NHL’s biggest stars participated in the three-day All-Star weekend in Raleigh, N.C., home of the Carolina Hurricanes.
All-Star Player Fantasy Draft
The festivities began on Friday, with the first ever All-Star Player Fantasy Draft.  It was filled with good-natured trash talking and players lobbying the captains, Nicklas Lidstrom and Eric Staal, to pick them.  The setup of the draft meant someone would be the last pick, which had many of the players squirming in their seats during the proceddings.
Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin had to drop out of All-Star weekend because of injuries, and their replacements were Jeff Skinner and Paul Stastny.
The first overall pick went to Team Staal and he chose goalkeeper Cam Ward, his teammate on the Carolina Hurricanes.  Team Lidstrom chose Steven Stamkos of the Tampa Bay Lightning.
Jonathan Toews of the Chicago Blackhawks didn’t get picked until the eighth round and looked stunned as he sat waiting to have his name called.  The Sedin brothers were separated, with Daniel going to Team Staal and Henrik to Team Lidstrom — it was the first time the twins had ever played against one another.
Staal eventually chose his brother, Marc, of the New York Rangers late in the draft.  He picked New York Rangers goalkeeper Henrik Lundqvist one round before he chose Marc, after a long pause between “New York Rangers” and “Henrik Lundqvist.”  When Marc was asked about the long pause and Eric picking Lundqvist, his New York teammate, Marc jokingly said he was “devastated” by his brother’s decision to not pick his own blood.
The last man sitting was Phil Kessel, who was a good sport about being the last pick and was given a car to ease his embarrassment.
SuperSkills Competition
Saturday’s SuperSkills event was entertaining to say the least.  Team Staal won overall, with the final score of 33-22.
Rookie Michael Grabner won Fastest Skater while Daniel Sedin won for Best Accuracy, going 4-for-4 on the targets in the first round, the only player to do so.  In the final round, he went 4-for-5 against Patrick Kane.
Team Lidstrom won the Skills Challenge Relay while Zdeno Chara beat his own record from last year for the Hardest Shot, hitting the puck 105.9 mph and winning the challenge.  The 6-foot-9 Boston Bruins defenseman told NHL.com that “records are meant to broken.”
Ovechkin won the Breakaway Challenge for the third time.  Corey Perry won the Elimination Shootout, shooting 3-for-3 against Jonas Hillar,  Marc-Andre Fleury and Tim Thomas.
The most memorable moment of SuperSkills was P.K. Subban (of the Montreal Canadiens) wearing Jeff Skinner’s jersey during the Breakaway Challenge, the event where the winner is voted on by the fans. Skinner, a crowd favorite in Carolina, was laughing as the crowd went crazy for “Skinner,” a.k.a. Subban.  Subban placed second, with 20.3 percent of the fan votes, behind Ovechkin.
All-Star Game
The final score of Sunday’s All-Star game at the RBC Center was Team Lidstrom 11, Team Staal 10.  The high-scoring game gave the frenzied crowd exactly what they wanted: entertainment. It was the third All-Star game in history where both teams scored more than 10 goals (it happened previously in 2009 and 2001).
Patrick Sharp of Team Staal won MVP of the game for his two assists and one goal.   Sharp’s three Blackhawk teammates — Patrick Kane, Jonathan Toews and Duncan Keith — were all on the winning team, Team Lidstrom.
“They won the game and I got the trophy, so I guess everybody is happy,” Sharp told NHL.com, when asked about the flight home to Chicago.  “I’ll be sure to bring (the MVP) up a few times.”
If you turned your TV on five minutes and 41 seconds after the game started, you would have missed four goals by team Staal (Ovechkin, Paul Stastny, Patrik Elias and Claude Giroux all scored) against Marc-Andre Fleury. By the 16th minute, the game was tied 4-4, with goals by Team Lidstrom’s Anze Kopitar, Dustin Byfuglien, Loui Eriksson and Matt Duchene against goalkeeper Cam Ward.
The second period brought Jonas Hiller of the Ducks on the ice as goalkeeper for Team Lidstrom and Carey Price of the Montreal Canadiens for Team Staal.   Sharp scored a goal in the first few minutes of the second period.  Team Staal’s Kris Letang (of the Pittsburgh Penguins) scored in the seventh minute, making the game 6-4.
During the period, Letang accidently shot the puck straight into Hiller’s face mask but the goalkeeper shook it off and Letang apologized to Hiller.  Kopitar scored his second goal later in the second period, and Lidstrom scored his first (it was Lidstrom’s 12th All-Star game).  Danny Briere finished the second period scoring with a goal to give Team Lidstrom a 7-6 lead.
In the third period, Team Staal had goalkeeper Henrik Lundqvist on the ice and Tim Thomas was on the ice for Team Lidstrom.  Team captain Eric Staal scored two goals in the third, one of them right between the legs of Thomas.
Ovechkin threw his stick during a breakaway by Duchene, the first penalty of any NHL All-Star game ever.  When asked why, Ovechkin told NHL.com, “Why not?  It’s fun.  I think fans love it.  It’s a good moment.  He didn’t score, right?  I’m in history again.”
Duchene wasn’t able to score a second goal after Lundqvist blocked his penalty shot.  Letang scored his second goal for Team Staal while Toews and Martin St. Louis scored back-to-back goals for Team Lidstrom.   Rick Nash made the game 10-9, with Team Lidstrom still leading.  Loui Eriksson scored his second goal, the game-winning goal, making it 11-9.  Eric Staal scored his second goal with 30 seconds left in the game, but it wasn’t enough to get his team the win.
The unpredictable game will go down as one of the most memorable games in All-Star history. And in some cases, history was made, even if it was unknown to the history maker.
Lundqvist, who blocked the first ever penalty shot in All-Star history in the third period, didn’t know he made a historic play until NHL.com told him.
His response: “Really?  So I’m part of history.  Perfect.”

NHL Fantasy Draft from the pro-writers

Carolina Hurricanes goalie Cam Ward was taken first overall in the first-ever fantasy NHL all-star draft Friday night.

Captain Eric Staal of Team Staal won the ceremonial "puck flip," to earn the right to choose first. He picked his teammate over loud cheers in front of the hometown crowd.
Ward has 22-15-5 record this season with a 2.70 goals-against average and .920 save percentage.
Tampa Bay Lightning star Steven Stamkos was picked second overall by captain Nik Lidstrom.

TSN.CA STAFF notes:
It had been almost nine years years since Cam Ward had heard his name called at an NHL Draft, but he got to hear it all over again on Friday when he was the No. 1 pick overall by team captain Eric Staal at the NHL All-Star Player Fantasy Draft in Carolina.
Staal won the coin toss and made the first selection from the podium on behalf of Team Staal, opting to take his 26-year-old teammate from the Hurricanes.
Nick Lidstrom of the Detroit Red Wings serves as the other team's captain, and opted for Steven Stamkos as his first selection (second overall).
Staal then picked Russian sniper Alex Ovechkin third overall.
Duncan Keith of the Blackhawks went fourth overall, with Team Lidstrom assistant captain and Blackhawks teammate Patrick Kane making the announcement from the podium. Blackhawks teammate Jonathan Toews joked that he was "halfway up the stairs" when Kane began the introduction of his pick with the phrase "my boy".
Daniel Sedin went fifth overall, and his brother Henrik went sixth, meaning they will be playing against each other for the first time.
Zdeno Chara went seventh, with Staal saying he didn't want to have to try to get through him at the All-Star game.
Shea Weber went eighth overall, claimed by Team Lidstrom.
The Blue Jackets' Rick Nash was selected ninth overall by Team Staal.
For the tenth pick, Team Lidstrom opted for goaltending and selected Tim Thomas, who is an impressive 24-5-6 with a 1.81 GAA this season.
Goaltender Henrik Lundqvist of the New York Rangers went 11th overall as he was picked by Team Staal.
The No. 12 selection was Danny Briere, who has 26 goals and 19 assists this season for the Flyers.
With the 13th pick overall, Staal finally picked his brother Marc, just a few minutes after some gentle ribbing from his sibling during a brief interview.
The 14th pick was Dustin Byfuglien, who has 16 goals and 25 assists this season with the Atlanta Thrashers.
Patrick Sharp of the Blackhawks, who has 26 goals and 20 assists this season, was picked 15th overall, going to Team Staal. Staal and Sharp are both from Thunder Bay, Ontario. Sharp patted Jonathan Toews on the way up to the podium; Toews had not been picked yet.
Toews did go next, though, being picked 16th overall by Team Lidstrom. Patrick Kane made the announcement with a devilish grin. Toews went much lower this time around than in 2006, when he was picked third overall in the real NHL Entry Draft. Toews was the 2010 Conn Smythe Trophy winner after the Hawks' Stanley Cup run.
Dan Boyle of the Sharks went 17th overall, going to Team Staal.
The 18th pick was Marc-Andre Fleury, who was the second goaltender named to Team Lidstrom. Fleury is 23-11-2 with a 2.19 GAA this season for the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Pick No. 19 was goalie Carey Price of the Montreal Canadiens, who went to Team Staal.
Jonas Hiller was picked 20th, the first Swiss goaltender and only the second Swiss player ever (Mark Streit was the first) to make the All-Star Game.
The 21st overall selection was Jeff Skinner of the Hurricanes, who received huge applause from the crowd. Skinner has 18 goals and 22 assists this year and, at age 18, is the youngest All-Star ever in any of the major sports.
Brad Richards of the Dallas Stars went 22nd overall. Richards has 20 goals and 37 assists this season and will play for Team Lidstrom.
Kris Letang of the Penguins went 23rd. Letang has seven goals and 34 assists so far this campaign. It is Letang's first All-Star game.
The 24th pick was blueliner Keith Yandle of the Coyotes. Yandle has eight goals and 36 assists this season.
The 25th selection was Claude Giroux of the Flyers. Giroux has 19 goals and 28 assists this season and will represent Team Staal. Flyers teammates Giroux and Briere had a beat on who would go first and Briere won.
The 26th pick was Minnesota Wild defenceman Brent Burns, who has 14 goals this season, second only to Byfuglien for defencemen.
20-year-old Erik Karlsson was the 27th selection. The Sens' blueliner has eight goals and 20 assists this season.
The 28th pick was Marty Havlat, who has quietly been having a very strong season, putting up 44 points so far.
The 29th selection was Corey Perry of the Ducks.
Anze Kopitar went 30th overall. He has 16 goals and 33 assists this season for the L.A. Kings, leading them in scoring.
Logan Couture and Taylor Hall were then designated to choose which teams they wanted themselves and their six respective players to play for on behalf of the rookie squads. Hall chose Team Lidstrom for his teammates, meaning Couture's squad was put on Staal's team.
The 31st overall pick was Patrik Elias of the New Jersey Devils, who went to Team Staal. His last All-Star Game was in 2002.
No. 32 was Matt Duchene, who went to Team Lidstrom. Duchene has 20 goals and 25 assists this year for the Colorado Avalanche.
As it narrowed down to the final four players remaining, the tension started to build. Who would be last?
For No. 33, Team Staal picked David Backes, an enforcer who also has 37 points this year.
The 34th overall pick was Loui Eriksson of the Stars. The forward has 17 goals and 32 assists this season, and only four penalty minutes.
Paul Stastny of the Avalanche was chosen 35th overall. Stastny has 17 goals and 26 assists this year.
That meant the last overall pick was Phil Kessel of the Toronto Maple Leafs. Kessel has 19 goals and 15 assists this season.
As James Duthie pointed out, there are over 600 players in the NHL and only 36 were drafted in the All-Star Fantasy Draft.
Staal was being advised over the course of the night by assistants Mike Green of the Washington Capitals, and the Canucks' Ryan Kesler. Joel Quenneville of the Blackhawks is head coach of Team Staal, and will be joined behind the bench by his Chicago assistant Mike Haviland.

Lidstrom was being advised by assistant captains Martin St. Louis of the Tampa Bay Lightning and Kane. Peter Laviolette of the Philadelphia Flyers and Alain Vigneault of the Vancouver Canucks will share coaching duties of Team Lidstrom.

Each squad drafted 18 players at the Raleigh Convention Centre.

Only three NFL teams have managed to win the Super Bowl at least five times. Discover which teams have been the most successful in winning Super Bowl games.
Many NFL teams have won multiple Super Bowls but only three have won five or more of the championship games: the Pittsburgh Steelers, San Francisco 49ers, and the Dallas Cowboys.

Pittsburgh Steelers - Six Super Bowl Wins

The Pittsburgh Steelers take the top spot as winners of the most Super Bowls. Having played in seven games, the team has won six giving them an 87.5% winning record.
  1. Super Bowl IX - Tulane Stadium, New Orleans, Louisiana - January 12, 1975: The Pittsburgh Steelers won their first NFL championship against the Minnesota Vikings with a final score of 16-6. Running back Franco Harris was the game's Most Valuable Player (MVP).

San Francisco 49ers - Five Super Bowl Wins

  1. Super Bowl XVI - Pontiac Silverdome, Pontiac, Michigan - January 24, 1982: The 49ers won their first NFL championship by defeating the Cincinnati Bengals with a score of 26-21. Quarterback Joe Montana earned the MVP honors.
  2. Super Bowl XIX - Stanford Stadium, Palo Alto, California - January 20, 1985: The 49ers met the Miami Dolphins and won by the score 38-16. Joe Montana was the game's MVP.
  3. Super Bowl XXIII - Joe Robbie Stadium, Miami, Florida - January 22, 1989: San Francisco beat the Cincinnati Bengals in their second championship match-up 20-16. Wide receiver Jerry Rice took the MVP honors.
  4. Super Bowl XXIV - Louisiana Superdome, New Orleans, Louisiana - January 28, 1990: The 49ers dominated the Denver Broncos in the most lopsided victory in Super Bowl history with a final score of 55-10. Joe Montana won the MVP award for a third time.
  5. Super Bowl XXIX - Joe Robbie Stadium, Miami, Florida - January 29, 1995: San Francisco met challenged the San Diego Chargers and won with a score of 49-26. Quarterback Steve Young was the game's MVP.

Dallas Cowboys - Five Super Bowl Wins

Holding the record for the most Super Bowl appearances at eight, the Dallas Cowboys have won five NFL championship titles to hold a 62.5 win percentage.
  1. Super Bowl VI - Tulane Stadium, New Orleans, Louisiana - January 16, 1972: The Dallas Cowboys squared off against the Miami Dolphins, winning the game 24-3. Quarterback Roger Staubach earned the MVP honors.
  2. Super Bowl XII - Superdome, New Orleans, Louisiana - January 15, 1978: Dallas defeated the Denver Broncos 27-10. Defensive tackle Randy White and defensive end Harvey Martin were co-MVPs for the game.
  3. Super Bowl XXVII - Rose Bowl, Pasadena, California - January 31, 1993: The Cowboys faced the Buffalo Bills and won by a score of 52-17. Quarterback Troy Aikman was voted as the game MVP.
  4. Super Bowl XXVIII - Georgia Dome, Atlanta, Georgia - January 30, 1994: Dallas met Buffalo for a second consecutive championship and defeated them 30-13. Running back Emmitt Smith was the game's MVP.
  5. Super Bowl XXX - Sun Devil Stadium, Phoenix, Arizona - January 28, 1996: Dallas won their first Super Bowl victory against the Pittsburgh Steelers, winning with a final score of 27-17. Cornerback Larry Brown was awarded the MVP title.
The Dallas Cowboys three NFL championship losses came in Super Bowl V to the Baltimore Colts and in Super Bowls X and XIII to the Pittsburgh Steelers. Of special note regarding Super Bowl V, instead of the Most Valuable Player award going to a player on the winning Colts team, the game MVP was Cowboys linebacker Chuck Howley.

Summary of NFL Records in Super Bowl Games

Of the 42 Super Bowls which have been played, the Pittsburgh Steelers, San Francisco 49ers, and Dallas Cowboys have won 16. These three teams have gone down in the record books as some of the elite teams in the past 40 years and continue to be among the most competitive and successful teams in the league today.
