Looking at cocktailz from a healthly view...

We all know that alcohol in abundance is not good for the body, mind or soul. With that being said, when used responsibly it can be used for many as a beneficial addition to anyone's day.

Any kind of alcohol is good for you in moderation, but vitamin- and antioxidant-packed fruit -- that's fresh fruit, not sugary, syrupy daiquiri mix -- is the secret to concocting a disease-fighting superdrink. We asked Sarma Melngailis, owner of the ultra-hip restaurant Pure Food and Wine in New York City, to share a round of her famously healthy cocktails. Mix them up on a hot summer night to catch a buzz you can feel extra-good about.

White Wine Sangria Cocktail Recipe

Red wine has been A-listed for its polyphenols, antioxidants that protect againstheart disease and cancer. Now it's time to let pale vinos like chardonnay and pinot grigio into the party. Recent research has revealed that the pulp of the grapes used to make white wine also contains polyphenols and other antioxidants -- they're just different from those found in red. Another study linked the antioxidants in white wine to better lung function.

1 green apple
1 pear
1 orange
1 c pineapple
1 plum
1 c watermelon
2 Tbsp fresh lemon juice
2 Tbsp agave nectar ($7,blueagavenectar.com)
1 bottle sauvignon blanc (Melngailis recommends St. Clair biodynamic white wines; $16, primovino.net.)

Dice fruit. Add all ingredients to wine in pitcher or punch bowl. Fill wine glasses with ice and pour. Garnish with orange slices. Makes 6 servings.

Blackberry Sunset

Blackberries fare a lot better under the influence than the intern at the company picnic. A recent study found that adding ethanol -- the type of alcohol found in vodka -- to blackberries and strawberries boosts their antioxidant levels. This recipe gets an extra dose of vitamins from the juice of yuzu ($12,chefsresource.com), a citrus fruit popular in Korea and Japan that's high in vitamin C and antioxidants.

1 medium handful of blackberries, muddled
2 oz yuzu juice
1 oz lime juice
1 oz lemon juice
1 oz agave nectar
3 oz vodka (or sake) Prosecco (or sparkling white wine) to taste

Divide muddled berries between 2 tall glasses. Fill glasses to rim with ice. Combine next 5 ingredients and pour over ice. Top with splash of Prosecco. Makes 2 servings.

Looking at some of these numbers you can alter your cocktail to suit your calorie count if your that ambitious!!

Looking at 5 of the said healthiest cocktailz I love that my good buddy Jack is at the top...

In composing this list of the five best healthy cocktails, taste, volume and caloric values were given equal consideration, as a really great healthy cocktail should satisfy your tastebuds and not at the expense of your health.  Keep in mind that if you don't like a particular liquor or brand of liquor, you may substitute another, provided you avoid malt liquors and liquors mixed with sugar.  When creating your healthy cocktails, always keep in mind that liquor contains 75 to 125 calories per ounce.
  1. Jack and Diet Coke.  It may not be the smoothest whisky in the world, but it is one of the best to mix with.  Order Jack Daniels on the side and mix it yourself to ensure the perfect calorie controlled healthy cocktail.  For added sweetness and just a few calories more, top it off with a maraschino cherry or two.
  2. Skinny Cosmopolitan.  The Cosmopolitan---simply comprised of Vodka and cranberry juice and lime---has been a girl's best friend for years and ranks second on our five best healthy cocktails list.  Scrap the full-sugar cranberry juice for low-sugar or no-sugar Ocean Spray and cut your calories in half.
  3. Skinny Gin and Tonic.  It's all about substitutions.  While an average Gin and Tonic contains over 200 calories, gin mixed with diet tonic and a wedge of lime is a hundred calories less and just as delicious.
  4. Bacardi Cuba Libre.  Combine a shot of Bacardi rum, half a shot of espresso, three dashes of decanter bitters, a lime wedge and Diet Coke to taste.  This is the richest healthy cocktail on this list. It's a little fancy and the added caffeine could raise your metabolism.
  5. Grey Goose Martini.  Okay, okay, so it isn't the lowest in calories, but at two shots a glass---and a pretty glass at that---it only takes one to loosen you up and two to start dancing; an exercise that burns 171 calories per thirty minutes for the 150 pound adult.  This and the fact that it is simply one of the most delicious drinks on the planet makes the Grey Goose Martini the last of our five best healthy cocktails.

Happy drinking my friends....Cheers from SipSum Cocktailz Staff

Game 7

So I ask myself, am I  writing about the Canucks again out of spite or valour? Will they disappoint again? Is it really their fault? Is it possible that politics will never allow the Vancouver Canucks the chance?

After witnessing the pathetic officiating on Sunday night, I have to review whether we are even given a fair chance to win the Stanley cup. I can only imagine the amount of Canucks fans yelling or worse throwing something at their flatscreen tv's after watching the clearly biased refs make the most obviously bad calls.

I once heard years ago from an unnamed NHL employee that we never had a chance at winning the Stanley Cup due to politics. I didn't believe a word of it and stood by the Canucks each year waiting our perfect season. The only reason I remember that conversation is because of the game I watched Sunday night. I have to wonder, are all sports becoming "organized"? Do the players actually get fair ref's? What's being said behind closed doors from the ones that have the money? I think folks that's what it comes down to...(old faithful)...the all might cheque book!! Does money make these decisions?

There truly is no reason for us to have not won Game 6. We played steady and kept our ground. The only reason we lost is, well really, do I have to state the obvious. I would like to think the NHL does not really think the public is that stupid and can't see what transpires during these games.

So here we are at game 7 at home........

Will we be golfing next week or preparing for our second series? Both will be trying to pick up a win with the line opening with Vancouver as a -165 favorite in this matchup. Let's see what tonigt has in store.

Game on bitches......

Beautiful BC celebrates 420. See what the 420 community says.....

No matter where you are right now in North America 420 is celebrated somewhere in your neighborhood. It's a day of celebration for our lovely leafy friend Marijuina and it's culture. After watching several documentaries, tv interviews and magazine articles, it's easy to see why this day is a day worth celebrating...
It's culture is growing everyday. With stats stating that 53% of Vancouverites have tried marijuina at least once. Our cannabis loving community is thriving. BC bud has been talked about all over the world and here we are in the heart of it all. Today is a proud day for someone living in BC, especially if you live in Vancouver.

So what do some of our web community have to say? Let's look....

First, what "420" doesn't mean:
• 420 isn't the number of a bill in U.S. Congress to legalize pot, despite many people thinking it is.
• 420 isn't the police or penal code for marijuana possession in California (or any other state), though many people believe that, as well.
• Nor is 420 is the number of chemical compounds in cannabis, the pot plant, though many authors seem fond of stating so.
What 420 is, whether expressed in the form 4:20 (as a time of day), 4/20 (as a calendar date), or just the unadorned numeral (pronounced "four-twenty"), is a universal symbol for the use and appreciation of marijuana. In fact, 4/20 (April 20) has come to be known in certain circles as "Marijuana Appreciation Day."
'420' origin and history
Notwithstanding the many and various urban legends that have grown up about the meaning of "420" and its connection with marijuana, the true story behind it is surprisingly prosaic. In the early 1970s a small group of hippie stoners at San Rafael High School in northern California used to meet at a designated location every day to smoke pot at 4:20 p.m. They did this so regularly that among members of the group "420" became a general euphemism for lighting up.
The catchphrase spread beyond their immediate circle, beyond the high school they attended, and ultimately beyond California, so that within a decade or two pot smokers were using it across the country and indeed the world over.
How popular is the expression today? A Google search on the paired terms "420" and "marijuana" brings up more than 6 million results, including a link to the website of 420 Magazine, a publication dedicated to what it refers to as "cannabis awareness."

What is 420? What does 4 20 or 4:20 mean? What is 420's origin-history?
Only the real hip hop partiers, rap artists, true herbal smoke lovers and four twenty pot heads will enjoy partaking in their favourite buzz at this time. Four hundred and twenty is fast becoming the secret code to anything to do with marijuana terminology, cannabis culture, and underground weed smokers. Discover what certain four twenty wall graffiti means. Find out what hip hop artists are communicating. Years ago the term 420(pronounced four twenty, not four hundred and twenty), was police code for smoking marijuana in a feature on pager codes that teenagers use to "talk" to each other. I began researching the number again and it seems I was wrong. Read on to learn the myths, the truth about the origin and what this term means for parents.
Known Myths
  • Police dispatch code for smoking pot is 420.
The number 420 is not police radio code for anything, anywhere. Checks of criminal codes suggest that the origin is neither Californian nor federal. For instance, California Penal Code 420 defines as a misdemeanor the hindrance of use of public lands.
  • There are approximately 420 active chemicals in marijuana.
Actually, there are approximately 315 active chemicals in marijuana. This number goes up and down depending on which plant is used.
  • April 20th is National Pot Smokers Day.
Well, it is now; but that wasn't the origin.
  • April 20th is Hitler's birthday.
Yes, it is his birthday. But, as 420 started out as a time, not a date, his birthday had nothing to do with it.
  • The date of the Columbine school shootings.
This happened after the term was already in use.
  • 4:20 is tea time for pot-smokers in Holland.
Tea time in Holland is at 5:30 pm, or is it 2:30 pm? Seems no one is quite sure when the wonderful people of Holland drink their tea.
According to Steven Hager, editor of High Times, the term 420 originated at San Rafael High School, in 1971, among a group of about a dozen pot-smoking wiseacres who called themselves the Waldos, who are now pushing 50. The term was shorthand for the time of day the group would meet, at the campus statue of Louis Pasteur, to smoke pot.
Intent on developing their own discreet language, they made 420 code for a time to get high, and its use spread among members of an entire generation. While our teens feel that they know something we don't, you can let them in on the fact that it was your generation that came up with the numbers. A quote from one of the Waldos in the High Times article states, "We did discover we could talk about getting high in front of our parents without them knowing by using the phrase 420." Fortunately, your teenagers will not have that same option.
What does 420 friendly mean?
This is a way to express the acceptance of smoking pot or accepting somone who does so, without overtly mentioning pot or marijuana.

You may find the phrase 420-friendly often in personal adds.

It refers to the term 420 which has become lingo smoking pot.
420 - 4: 20 and Pulp Fiction : Directed by Quentin Tarantino
There is a persistent myth that that all the clocks in the movie are set to 4:20 (although, certainly all the clocks on the wall in the pawn shop are set to 4:20). However, in at least two scenes it is obvious that this is not the case. In the "Bonnie Situation" while Jimmy, Vince and Jules are drinking coffee in the kitchen, the clock clearly reads 8:15. Secondly, when Vince and Jules go to retrieve the briefcase, it is "7:22 in the a.m.".
The significance of the time 4:20 is that it is slang for smoking marijuana. More Pulp Fiction >>

Esquire Article.....

Huh? 420? Like, did it ever cross your mind that maybe those old ardent potheads forgot? And "ardent" — where'd you come up with that one? "ardent" — you know, if you keep repeating it, it sounds funny as hell. Ardent. Our dent. Hardbent. Same with "nondominant arm": Say that five times and you won't even remember what you were talking about.
You know who knows? Larry "Ratso" Sloman, author of Reefer Madness: A History of Marijuana. But it's a really long story, man. It's sooooooo long. It starts with some high school kids in San RafaelCalifornia, back in 1971. Seriously, man. Ask Sloman — he says it started as 420 Louis, meaning "at 4:20 [they'd] meet by the Louis Pasteur statue outside the high school" and get high.
From there, this group of kids — "they called themselves 'Waldos,' " Sloman says — started getting high with the Grateful Dead at their rehearsal studio in San Rafael. Around 1990, High Times magazine senior editor Steve Bloom saw a flyer at a Dead concert that "told the story of 420, and that was news to me."
That was Steve Bloom saying that last thing, man. But the story on the flyer — about how "420" was California police code for smoking pot — was horseshit, man. Bloom says "after about five years," the Waldos story emerged.
"A few of these Waldos" — um, this is Sloman talking again now — "surfaced and contacted High Times to set the record straight in 1997." Which is "about five years" if you're baked. So it checks out. Thanks for asking, man. About the pit-bull attack, too. Such a gritty question, man. Nondominantarm nondominantarm nondominantarm nondominantarm nondominantarm.
