Top Cocktails to Celebrate Canada Day

Canada Day conjures up memories of family cookouts and crowding on a blanket in our local park to watch the fireworks. Whether you're celebrating with friends or family, here are my top cocktail recipes to match your celebratory personality. Are you the urban sophistcate, mix n' mingler, or life of the party? Well, warm up those mixologist muscles and read on to match yourself with the perfect drink to sip on this Canada Day.
There are few things that scream Canadian quite like maple syrup. Now this sweet must-have has gone from the breakfast table to behind the bar. Take advantage of the recent sap season by adding it to your favourite martini. It's the ideal choice for the oh-so chic and oh-so Canadian.

There's good reason why sangria is such a big hit in the summer, it allows us to enjoy the best-tasting seasonal fruit the province has to offer. Why not grab a group of friends and go pick your own fruit for the sangria ! Visit www.PickYourOwn.org to find a farm near you and support local farmers.

350 ml bottle Niagara ice wine

2 cups dry white wine
1 1/3 cup white cranberry juice
1 tablespoon superfine sugar
1 full lemon sliced into wheels
4 cups of seasonal fruit: mixed hulled strawberries, red and golden raspberries, cherries, and rhubarb

In a pitcher, stir the wines, juices and sugar, and add fruits. Cover and refrigerate overnight or at least 4 hours. Serve chilled over ice.

Take a shot of independence with this Canadian flag-inspired creation ! Dare to stand out, show your true colours, and get a bit wild !

1 oz peach schnapps, chilled
1 oz cranberry juice
1 oz vodka, chilled

Pour a small measure of ice-cold peach schnapps into a frosted shot glass. Over the back of a barspoon, carefully layer an equal measure of cranberry juice so that it sits on top of the schnapps. Over the top of the cranberry juice layer a similar amount of ice-cold vodka.

O' Cranada

Now I wouldn't want to forget the non-drinkers in the bunch. Here's a drink that's bursting with fun and flavour, also great for kids.

2 parts white cranberry juice
1 oz maple syrup
1 oz lime juice
1 part club soda
garnish with cranberries (can also substitute blueberries or blackberries)

Mix all the ingredients and serve in a highball glass. Garnish the drink with cranberries at the bottom. Special trick: the night before, place cranberries in water and freeze in ice cube trays overnight. When added to the glass it will seem as though the cranberries are floating, and it cools off your drink !
